Regional cooperation essential to prevent digital violence against women: Maldives High Commissioner

The Maldives High Commission in Dhaka, jointly organized by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), the Department of Information and Communication Technology, Aspire to Innovate (a2i) and the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS), organized a seminar on the occasion of the ‘16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence’. This year’s theme was “UNiTE to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls”.

As the keynote speaker at the event, Maldives High Commissioner Sheunin Rashid highlighted the national initiatives of the Maldives government to combat digital violence against women in the country. She said that the Maldives is formulating a strong legal framework to ensure the safety of women and girls on digital platforms, cybercrime-related laws are being modernized, and the government is giving utmost importance to protecting the rights and dignity of women.

The seminar participants emphasized the importance of collective efforts to prevent digital violence against women and girls through regional cooperation, institutional capacity building, and strengthening public-private and international partnerships.

At the end of the event, a joint commitment was expressed to build a safe, inclusive, and women-empowerment-friendly digital environment. All present called for everyone to work together to create a safe digital horizon for every woman and girl.
