Dhaka University closed due to earthquake, orders to vacate halls by 5 pm today

Considering the physical and mental trauma suffered by students due to the recent earthquake and subsequent tremors, and giving utmost importance to their overall safety, an emergency meeting of the Dhaka University (DU) Syndicate was held virtually on Saturday (November 22, 2025) under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan. Syndicate members were present at the meeting. In addition, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Principal of Dhaka Medical College, Acting Director of the Planning and Development Office, Acting Controller of Examinations and Acting Chief Engineer participated in the meeting.

The meeting analyzed the opinions of BUET experts, Director of the Planning and Development Office and Chief Engineer. Their opinion is that a thorough examination of the post-earthquake residential halls is required, and an overall risk assessment and necessary renovations are required. In the interest of assessing this risk and possible renovations, the residential halls need to be vacated.

Therefore, the meeting decided to close all classes and examinations of the university and vacate the residential halls until next Saturday (November 29, 2025). The meeting requested the principals to take necessary measures to vacate the residential halls by 5 pm tomorrow, Sunday.

It is to be noted that the university offices will remain open as usual.
