European Commission Director for Migration and Asylum Michael Shotter pays courtesy call on Home Affairs Adviser

Today, Wednesday (September 10, 2025), Home Affairs and Agriculture Advisor Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) paid a courtesy call on European Commission Director for Migration and Asylum Michael Shotter at the office of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

During the meeting, various issues including bilateral relations, migration, human trafficking, law enforcement reform and border security were discussed.

At the beginning, the Advisor welcomed the Director for Migration and Asylum and said, the European Union is our development partner and a tested friend. A large part of our workforce is working in EU countries. We are always trying to send skilled and unskilled workers legally. He requested the Director to take skilled, unskilled and unskilled workers from Bangladesh.

Director Michel Shotter said that the recent internal political pressure against immigration in EU countries is continuously increasing. He called on Bangladesh to work on this issue, expressing concern over the illegal immigration of a significant number of Bangladeshi citizens in his union country. He advised on the reform of the law enforcement agencies, especially the police, after the country’s political transformation.

In the meeting, the Home Affairs Advisor said that Bangladesh has a zero tolerance policy to prevent human trafficking and said that Bangladesh is working by considering illegal immigration and human trafficking seriously. Some of the human trafficking syndicates have already been brought under the law. Necessary amendments are being made to the law related to human trafficking. Police reform work is also underway. The Advisor also informed the meeting that Bangladesh expects EU cooperation in border security and preventing illegal immigration. The EU Migration Director also assured to work together on this issue.

At that time, European Union Ambassador to Bangladesh Michel Miller and senior officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs were present.
