US Ambassador to Dhaka pays courtesy call on Speaker

US Ambassador Brent T. Christensen paid a courtesy call on Speaker of the National Assembly of Bangladesh Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram MP at his office today (June 2, 2026).

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram said that the progress of relations between Bangladesh and America began during the Great Liberation War of 1971. US diplomat Archer Kent Blood made an important contribution to Bangladesh in the Great Liberation War. He said that the governments of Bangladesh and America are crossing a milestone in friendly relations.

The Speaker said that the last National Assembly elections held in Bangladesh were conducted in a free and fair manner. The people of Bangladesh have always struggled against tyranny. He said that Bangladesh can achieve real prosperity only through democracy.

During the meeting, they both emphasized the duty-free benefits of Bangladeshi products in the US market. The delegation also exchanged views on increasing foreign direct investment cooperation between Bangladesh, establishing people-to-people relations, celebrating Democracy Day at the Parliamentary Caucus Forum, US government assistance in recovering laundered money from Bangladesh, and alleviating public suffering by exploring oil and gas fields in Bangladesh to resolve the ongoing energy crisis.

The Speaker briefed the US Ambassador on the Rohingya crisis in Bangladesh and proposed that the US play an important role in resolving the Rohingya crisis.

The Ambassador congratulated him on being elected as the Speaker of the National Parliament.

Members of the US Embassy delegation and senior officials of the Bangladesh National Parliament Secretariat were present at the event.
