Thailand–Bangladesh Maritime Connectivity Strengthened as Thai Ambassador Visits Chattogram Port

Mrs. Thitiporn Chirasawadi, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand to Bangladesh, paid an official visit to Chattogram on 23–24 December 2025, underscoring growing momentum in Thailand–Bangladesh trade and maritime cooperation.

During the visit, the Ambassador met with Rear Admiral S. M. Moniruzzaman, Chairman of the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA). She received detailed briefings on the Port of Chattogram’s infrastructure, capacity, and ongoing development initiatives, and toured key port terminals to gain first-hand insight into port operations.

Both sides highlighted the strategic importance of launching the proposed Ranong–Chattogram maritime shipping route, which is expected to reduce shipping time between Thailand and Bangladesh to approximately 5–7 days. The new route is also seen as a major step toward enhancing Thailand’s maritime connectivity with South Asia.

According to discussions, the inaugural shipment from Ranong Port to Chattogram is anticipated to take place in early April 2026, driven by close coordination among the port authorities as well as the chambers of commerce and industry of both countries. In this context, both sides agreed that the conclusion of a Thailand–Bangladesh Free Trade Agreement (FTA) would be a key instrument to further boost bilateral trade and ensure the long-term sustainability of the Ranong–Chattogram shipping route.

As part of her visit to Chattogram, Ambassador Chirasawadi also toured two major industrial facilities. She visited the CP Chattogram Feed Mill, a poultry and aquaculture feed production plant operated by CP Bangladesh, a Thai company that plays an important role in supporting Bangladesh’s food security.

In addition, the Ambassador visited the Korean Export Processing Zone (KEPZ), Bangladesh’s first privately owned special economic zone, which has made a significant contribution to job creation, skills development, and economic growth. KEPZ hosts Youngone Corporation (Bangladesh), which uses Bangladesh as a key production base for textiles, garments, and footwear destined for global markets.

The visit reflects the deepening economic partnership between Thailand and Bangladesh and highlights shared efforts to strengthen trade, investment, and regional connectivity.
