State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, MP, highlighted Bangladesh’s progress and future plans at the Dakar International Forum on Peace and Security in Africa.

While addressing a high-level panel moderated by Senegalese Foreign Minister Sheikh Niang, he said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Bangladesh is moving forward on a new democratic journey, the goal of which is to build a non-discriminatory and prosperous state.

In his speech, the State Minister thanked Senegal for recognizing Bangladesh as the first independent state among African countries and emphasized the need to further strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries. He recalled the visit of martyred President Ziaur Rahman to Senegal in March 1981 and said that this visit took the relations between the two countries to new heights.

Highlighting Bangladesh’s economic, digital, humanitarian and social security activities, the State Minister said that the government is committed to improving the quality of life and ensuring overall welfare of the people. He emphasized the active role of the youth and highlighted various initiatives including “Family Card” and “Farmer Card” to empower women and increase national capacity.
He called on the international community to establish world peace and advance the “Women, Peace and Security” program, mentioning Bangladesh’s contribution to the UN peacekeeping operations. At the time, he respectfully recalled the role of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia in expanding women’s education.
Expressing concern about the risks of digital disinformation and online harassment, especially activities targeting women, he proposed the formation of a global platform, which was appreciated by the delegates participating in the conference.
The State Minister proposed to share Bangladesh’s experience with vulnerable countries in dealing with the effects of climate change. In addition, he reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to world humanity by providing shelter to the Rohingya displaced from Myanmar.
On the sidelines of the conference, he held meetings with Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister Onishi Yohei and Portuguese Minister of State Ana Isabel Javier. Discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, technology, skill development and infrastructure.
He also exchanged views with representatives of Oman, Chad and Switzerland. Bangladesh Ambassador to Morocco and Senegal Sadia Faizunnesa was present at the conference with him.
Senegalese President Bassirou Dioumaye Diakhar Faye inaugurated the two-day conference. Heads of state and government, ministers, diplomats and civil society representatives from various countries, including Africa, participated in the conference.
