On Monday (September 14, 2026), Barrister Kaiser Kamal, MP—Deputy Speaker of the Bangladesh National Parliament and leader of the Bangladeshi parliamentary delegation—held a bilateral meeting with Angela Thokozile (Thoko) Didiza, MP, Speaker of the South African National Assembly, and Dr. Annelie Lotriet, MP, Deputy Speaker.
The meeting took place ahead of the inaugural ceremony of the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC), organized by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA). The conference is being held in Cape Town from September 13 to September 19, 2026.
During the meeting, held in a cordial atmosphere, the leaders discussed the existing relations between Bangladesh and South Africa, the expansion of bilateral trade and investment, the enhancement of diplomatic ties, and various regional and international issues of mutual interest.
Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal stated that it is essential to further increase engagement at both government and private sector levels to harness the trade and investment potential between the two nations. He emphasized the importance of exchanging business delegations and fostering greater mutual interaction.
He also urged the South African leaders to actively consider establishing a resident High Commission in Dhaka. He noted that the establishment of a South African High Commission in Dhaka would facilitate and strengthen diplomatic ties, consular services, trade, investment, and people-to-people connections between the two countries.
Both sides emphasized strengthening bilateral relations through parliamentary diplomacy and increasing regular dialogue, the exchange of experiences, and the exchange of parliamentary delegations between the parliaments of the two countries.
The Bangladeshi parliamentary delegation includes Humam Quader Chowdhury, MP; Sakila Farzana, MP; Md. Mahbubul Alam, MP; and the delegation’s secretary, Barrister Md. Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan.
