Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University is the champion in the Immigrants Day debate competition.

The debate team of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SBU) emerged champions in the debate competition organized by Debate for Democracy on the occasion of ‘International Migrants Day’ and ‘National Expatriates Day-2024’ at the ATN Bangla Studio of Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (FDC) on December 20 (Friday). The runner-up was the debate team of Begum Badrunnesa Government Women’s College.

Eminent economist, Chairman of Investment Corporation of Bangladesh, Professor Dr. Abu Ahmed, was present as the chief guest in the debate competition titled ‘Proper evaluation of migrant workers can increase remittance flow’.

Speaking as the chief guest, Professor Dr. Abu Ahmed said, “By complying with so many conditions, our expatriate brothers can send back to the country the amount equivalent to the loan we do not have from the IMF in one and a half months. Therefore, we should first consider their due respect and facilities.”

The chairman of the organizing organization Debate for Democracy, Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiran, expressed his expectation of 35 billion US dollars in remittance income by 2025. At that time, he said, if incentives are given to foreign income, it is expected to increase from 2.5 percent to 4 percent. In addition, he called for ensuring social security for migrants and reforming various institutions in the country.

Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Latif, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Md. Belal Hossain, Treasurer, Professor Muhammad Abul Bashar and Moderator of the Debating Society, Professor Dr. Tajul Islam Chowdhury Tuhin congratulated the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University team for becoming champions in the debate competition.
