Desk Report:
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has announced an increase in the salaries and benefits for members of the village police (Gram Police). Under this new decision, a village police member will now receive a monthly salary of 10,500 Taka, while the head of the village police unit will receive 11,000 Taka. Additionally, the government will provide a monthly mobile bill allowance of 150 Taka to each member. The Prime Minister stated that these decisions will take effect starting Saturday.
Furthermore, he announced the recruitment of two additional female village police members for every union in the country, as well as the introduction of six months of maternity leave for female personnel.
The Prime Minister made these announcements while speaking as the chief guest at a grand rally of the village police, held on Saturday afternoon at the National Parade Ground in Tejgaon, Dhaka, to mark the historic ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’ (November 7). He attended the event accompanied by his wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman.
During the rally, the Prime Minister exchanged greetings with the village police members in attendance. The event drew approximately 41,000 village police personnel from various districts and upazilas across the country, transforming it into a massive gathering.
At the event, the Prime Minister presented special honors to eight outstanding village police members, selected from the country’s eight administrative divisions.
The village police play a vital role in maintaining law and order, ensuring public safety, and supporting the operations of local administrations in rural areas. These new measures—increasing salaries, providing mobile bill allowances, and recruiting more female members—are seen as a significant step by the government toward enhancing the financial and professional prospects of the village police force.
