East Timorese President Jose Ramos-Horta arrived in Dhaka on a four-day visit. Horta was welcomed by Nobel laureate economist Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The East Timorese President was given a red carpet welcome at the airport.
He arrived in Dhaka on a special Singapore Airlines flight after 10:30 pm on Saturday (December 14, 2024).

Ramos-Horta was taken directly from the airport to the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel, where he will stay during his visit. A 19-member delegation, including the Foreign Minister of Timor-Leste, will accompany him during his stay in Dhaka from December 14 to 17.
The East Timorese President will participate in several high-level meetings and events aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. On the second day of the visit, on the morning of December 15, he will meet with Foreign Affairs Advisor Touhid Hossain.
Later, Ramos-Horta will meet with Principal Advisor Dr. Yunus and then hold a delegation-level meeting.

According to the Foreign Ministry’s schedule, a joint press briefing will be held after the meeting. During this time, the two countries are expected to sign a visa waiver agreement and a memorandum of understanding for Foreign Office Consultations (FOC).
In the afternoon, Ramos-Horta will meet with Timor-Leste’s Honorary Consul to Bangladesh Qutubuddin Ahmed and Bangladesh Football Federation President and BNP leader Tabith Awal.
On the third day, December 16, the Timor-Leste President will meet with Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin at Bangabhaban. He will also visit the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar to pay tribute to the heroes of Bangladesh’s Liberation War.
Ramos-Horta will attend the 54th Victory Day celebrations to mark Bangladesh’s historic victory in 1971.
On the last day of the visit, on December 17, the Timor-Leste President will deliver a speech on “Challenges of Peace in the Contemporary World” at the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) auditorium.
He will interact with Bangladeshi students and young leaders. He is expected to share his experience of leading his country’s independence movement, the role of the people and Timor-Leste’s post-independence aspirations.
Ramos-Horta will then leave Dhaka after concluding his visit with the aim of strengthening diplomatic and cultural relations between Bangladesh and Timor-Leste.
