Prime Minister Tarique Rahman Aims to Transform Bangladesh-Japan Relations into a Driver of Economic Prosperity

Diplomatic Desk:

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has expressed his commitment to transforming the long-standing friendship between Bangladesh and Japan into a catalyst for economic growth, job creation, and shared prosperity. To achieve this, he has urged Japanese investors, business leaders, and financial institutions to explore investment opportunities in Bangladesh.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman made these remarks during a joint press conference held following a bilateral summit with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at the Kantei (the Prime Minister’s Office of Japan) in Tokyo on Tuesday (October 27, 2026).

The Prime Minister stated that the partnership between Bangladesh and Japan is built upon decades of friendship, trust, and mutual respect. He noted that an opportunity has emerged to elevate the relationship between the two nations to new heights. He extended a sincere invitation to Japanese investors and business communities to become partners in the next phase of Bangladesh’s development and to capitalize on existing investment opportunities.

He emphasized that his government is committed to working with Japanese partners to unlock Bangladesh’s economic potential through productive investments, technology transfer, the creation of skilled employment, and mutually beneficial business ventures.

Commitment to Enhancing Cooperation in Key Sectors

Highlighting the importance of expanding economic cooperation, the Prime Minister stated that both nations have pledged to strengthen collaboration in key areas, including energy, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), railways, infrastructure, deep-sea ports, and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

Tarique Rahman remarked that by working together, the two countries can build a more resilient, stable, and prosperous future for their respective peoples. In this regard, he underscored the importance of fostering effective collaboration with partners from both the public and private sectors of Japan.

It was noted during the press conference that the leaders held productive discussions on a range of bilateral, regional, and international issues. Furthermore, they reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening their long-standing partnership. The Prime Minister further stated that several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in key areas were exchanged between Bangladesh and Japan during the official visit. The outcomes of the discussions and the shared priorities of the two nations will be highlighted in a joint statement.

Acknowledging Japan’s Contribution to Bangladesh’s Development

Reflecting on Japan’s long-standing role as a development partner, Prime Minister Tareq Rahman noted that Japan holds a special place in the hearts of the Bangladeshi people. The friendship between the two nations is built upon mutual respect, trust, and a shared commitment to peace, prosperity, and stability.

He recalled that Japan was among the first countries to recognize Bangladesh following its independence in 1971. For over three decades, Japan has served as one of Bangladesh’s most valued development partners, making significant contributions to the country’s socio-economic progress and infrastructure development.

Expressing deep gratitude to Japan for this enduring friendship, the Prime Minister stated that the goal is to transform the bilateral relationship into a powerful engine for creating economic opportunities and achieving shared prosperity.

He also extended his appreciation to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and the people of Japan for the warm welcome and sincere hospitality extended during his official visit.
