Prime Minister condoles death of Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the death of Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar, former Acting President, former Speaker of the National Assembly, soldier of the 1952 Language Movement and member of the BNP National Standing Committee.

In a condolence message today (July 12, 2026), the Prime Minister prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and expressed deep condolences to his bereaved family members.

In her condolence message, the Prime Minister said, “Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar was a wise, experienced, honest and dedicated personality in Bangladeshi politics. In his long and colorful political life, he served as Acting President and Speaker of the National Assembly with honesty, wisdom and sense of responsibility.”

He further said, “Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar has played a responsible role for the state at various important times in the country. He has performed various important responsibilities of the government, including Minister of Education, Minister of State for Land, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and Minister of State for Public Works and Urban Development, with great skill and dedication.”

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said, “The nation will remember Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar’s contribution to the welfare of the country and the people with respect. His death is an irreparable loss in the political arena of the country.”

It is worth noting that Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar was one of the senior figures in Bangladeshi politics. He served as the Speaker of the National Assembly and also served as the Acting President several times according to the constitution. During his long political and legal career, he played an important role in the democratic and constitutional activities of the country.
