Peacekeeping missions must be more modern and technology-based: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman

Desk Report:

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that to make Bangladesh’s contribution to establishing world peace more effective, future peacekeeping missions must be made modern, visionary and technology-based. To this end, the government is implementing various initiatives to modernize the armed forces and police forces in phases to fulfill its responsibilities in the international arena, including UN peacekeeping missions.

He said these things while speaking as the chief guest at a program organized on the occasion of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers under the theme ‘Invest in Peace’ at the Dhaka Cantonment on Wednesday (June 10, 2026) morning.

At the program, the Prime Minister honored the family members of six Bangladeshi soldiers who were martyred while serving in the UN peacekeeping mission in Sudan in 2025. At the same time, she also presented honors to members of the armed forces injured in various peacekeeping missions, including that attack.

The Prime Minister said, “On the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, I remember with deep respect the brave peacekeepers from all over the world who have sacrificed their lives while carrying out their great responsibility of establishing world peace.”

She also said, “Since 1988, 175 peacekeepers from Bangladesh have been martyred while performing their duties as members of the United Nations peacekeeping force. Many have been injured. I pray for the forgiveness of their souls. This sacrifice of the martyrs as members of the United Nations peacekeeping force will be a shining example not only for Bangladesh, but also for anti-war and peace-loving people.”

The Prime Minister said that this sacrifice of the peacekeepers proves that the peacekeepers of Bangladesh are always committed not only to protecting the independence and sovereignty of the motherland, but also to establishing peace in any part of the world under the flag of the United Nations.

At the beginning of the program, the Holy Quran was recited. Later, a minute of silence was observed in memory of the members who were martyred in the peacekeeping mission. A special documentary presentation on UN peacekeeping operations was also screened at the event.

At the end of the event, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman virtually exchanged greetings with Bangladeshi peacekeepers deployed in peacekeeping missions in different countries around the world.

Bangladesh has long been playing an important role in the international arena as one of the top contributors to UN peacekeeping operations. The professionalism, courage and sacrifice of the peacekeepers have brightened the image of Bangladesh worldwide.
