Oikko Parishad Hosts Open Discussion on the Future of BGMEA

Oikko Parishad, brought together over 250 small and medium-sized garment entrepreneurs under the banner of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on Monday (January 6, 2025) to discuss the future of the export-oriented garment industry. The event, held at Uttara Club, Dhaka, served as a platform for members to share insights and concerns ahead of the upcoming BGMEA elections.

Presided over by Oikko Parishad’s Chief Coordinator, Mohsin Alam, the discussion highlighted critical issues facing the sector, including resolving HS code duplicity, enhancing coordination with government bodies, business facilitation, exit policies, and fair pricing strategies. Alam emphasized the importance of BGMEA prioritizing the interests of its members, stating, “BGMEA must function as a supportive and non-political organization led by experienced and capable individuals.”

General members voiced their concerns, stressing the need for reforms within BGMEA. Some criticized the organization’s reliance on renting its building for income and called for greater equity in its operations. Proposals included linking bond automation with banking systems to streamline access and extending financial incentives to small and medium-sized factories to ensure fair treatment.

Entrepreneurs also underscored the importance of addressing VAT and tax issues, fostering collaboration between large and small factories to nurture new entrepreneurs, and improving access to healthcare at BGMEA facilities.

Kafiluddin, a BGMEA member, expressed the challenges faced by industry players in navigating customs, electricity, and banking systems, advocating for greater transparency in the upcoming elections. Meanwhile, Abul Kalam, MD of Chaity Group, pledged to support better leadership, affirming that the BGMEA should serve as a business organization rather than a profit-oriented entity.

The event marked a significant moment for the Oikko Parishad as it formally launched its campaign to advocate for equitable rights and democratic practices within the BGMEA. With promises of inclusivity and reform, the coalition aims to address the pressing needs of its members and steer the garment industry towards a more sustainable future.
