Number of SIMs per subscriber to be reduced before elections: Home Affairs Adviser

The number of mobile SIMs per subscriber will be reduced before the elections, Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) has said.

The advisor made this statement while briefing reporters after the 15th meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on Law and Order at the conference room of the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Monday (October 26, 2025) afternoon. Members of the Advisory Council Committee on Law and Order participated in the meeting.

The advisor said that according to the current rules, a mobile subscriber can register a maximum of 15 SIMs against his National Identity Card (NID). He said that after October 30, 2025, the number of SIM registrations per mobile subscriber against NID will be reduced to 10. Efforts will be made to further reduce the number of SIMs per subscriber before the National Assembly elections.

Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) said, using one person’s SIM card, another person commits a crime. In this way, the real culprit often remains out of reach. For this, the number of SIM cards registered at the individual level will be reduced. The advisor said, after an incident, it is found that the SIM does not belong to that person. That is why the number of SIM cards will be reduced before the election.

In response to a question from journalists regarding the level playing field in the election, the advisor said, there has been no objection from the political parties in this regard. During the tenure of the current interim government, there was a level playing field before, there is now and there will be in the future. He said, there has been no bias in the recruitment and posting of law enforcement agencies. Recruitment and posting have been done with transparency. All preparations are being made for a fair election, he expressed hope that the election will be conducted in a fair and good manner.

Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Nasimul Gani, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam, BGB Director General Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, and Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defense Force Director General Major General Abdul Motaleb Sajjad Mahmud were present at the briefing.
