National Task Force calls on UN to ensure sustainable repatriation of forcibly displaced Myanmar citizens

The 46th meeting of the National Taskforce on Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMNs) was held on Tuesday (24 December, 2024) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the chairmanship of Foreign Secretary and Taskforce Chairperson Mr. Md. Jasim Uddin, NDC. Representatives from various United Nations agencies working in Bangladesh, the World Bank, the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC), and multiple government ministries, departments, and agencies attended the meeting.

The meeting discussed several issues related to the FDMNs residing in Cox’s Bazar and Bhashan Char, including challenges in the camps, infrastructure, electricity, healthcare, family planning, and funding from organizations like the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank for the welfare of both the Rohingya and the local communities. Additionally, the growing challenges posed by the prolonged stay of the Rohingya in Bangladesh were highlighted, along with the overall security concerns in and around the camps. The need for managing the newly arrived Myanmar nationals was also emphasized.

The Chairperson stressed that the sustainable repatriation of the Rohingya to Myanmar remains the only viable solution to this crisis. He urged all stakeholders to take effective measures to ensure this outcome.

The meeting called upon the United Nations and the international community to secure the necessary funds to continue humanitarian efforts for the FDMNs. UN representatives briefed the meeting on the ongoing programs for Rohingyas in Rakhine State. The participants urged the UN to take coordinated and effective steps to create a conducive environment in Rakhine for their safe and sustainable repatriation.
