National Consultation on Global Compact for Migration Held in Dhaka

On Sunday (22 December, 2024) the Bangladesh Migration Compact Taskforce, supported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Bangladesh, and under the joint leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment organized the National Consultation for the Regional Review of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) at Hotel InterContinental, Dhaka.

The national consultation provided a crucial platform to assess Bangladesh’s progress as a GCM Champion Country in the GCM implementation and provided a platform to highlight the country’s achievements while identifying the challenges and opportunities to inform the country’s position at the second GCM Regional Review for Asia and the Pacific, scheduled to be held in February 2025.

Foreign Secretary, Ambassador Md. Jashim Uddin, underlined that human mobility lies at the heart of today’s global transformations and can be a powerful driver for achieving zero poverty and zero unemployment, aligning with Hon’ble Chief Adviser’s goal of Three Zeroes. He reiterated Bangladesh’s steadfast commitment in implementing the GCM calling for collaborative global action to tackle shared challenges.

Md. Ruhul Amin, Secretary, Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment reiterated that through collective efforts, the Government of Bangladesh aims to refine strategies that address the challenges, enhance the rights and well-being of migrants, and align with global best practices for sustainable development.

Participants included representatives from the Government of Bangladesh, CSOs/NGOs, development partners, and other key stakeholders.
