Myanmar lifts state of emergency after 4 years, elections in December

Myanmar’s junta government announced on Thursday (July 31, 2025) the lifting of the state of emergency that has been in place in the country for 4 years.

AFP reported from Yangon that the junta government is strengthening preparations ahead of the national elections to be held in December. However, opposition parties have boycotted the elections and international observers are criticizing them.

It is worth noting that the military imposed a state of emergency in February 2021, overthrowing the democratically elected government.
