Montenegro Interested in Importing Pharmaceuticals, Leather, and Jute Alongside Bangladeshi Garments

Diplomatic Desk:

Emphasis has been placed on forming a Bangladesh-Montenegro Parliamentary Friendship Group to further strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations.

This matter was discussed on Monday morning (October 5, 2026) when Gordan Stojović, a Member of Parliament from Montenegro, paid a courtesy call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting highlighted the importance of establishing a Bangladesh-Montenegro Parliamentary Friendship Group to expand ties between the parliaments, strengthen parliamentary diplomacy, facilitate the exchange of parliamentary delegations, and enhance people-to-people contact.

Noting the immense potential for increasing bilateral trade, the meeting emphasized expanding trade through diversification and addressing existing challenges. Pointing out that Montenegro is an import-dependent nation, the Montenegrin MP stated that there are opportunities to increase imports from Bangladesh—beyond ready-made garments—to include pharmaceuticals, leather and leather goods, ceramics, and jute and jute products.

The State Minister for Foreign Affairs outlined various promising sectors for investment in Bangladesh, highlighting opportunities in agriculture, agro-based food processing, seafood, eco-tourism, ready-made garments, renewable energy, and waste management. In turn, the Montenegrin MP discussed his country’s potential for investment in various sectors, including renewable energy.

Describing Montenegro as a key regional player in tourism, the MP expressed interest in joint cooperation and investment to develop Bangladesh’s tourism sector.

Discussions also covered deepening cooperation and partnerships within international organizations on shared issues such as education, women’s empowerment, sports and culture, manpower and employment opportunities, human mobility and migration, visa facilitation, and climate change. The State Minister for Foreign Affairs stated that the government is working to increase the legal migration of skilled manpower from Bangladesh. He noted that Bangladesh’s vast pool of skilled personnel includes IT professionals, engineers, construction workers, and healthcare sector workers.

During the meeting, a Member of Parliament from Montenegro mentioned that the country requires over 50,000 skilled workers annually. Highlighting the potential to recruit manpower from Bangladesh to meet labor demands in sectors such as tourism, construction, hospitality, and healthcare, he expressed a positive attitude towards recruiting workers through a G2G (government-to-government) agreement.

Both sides emphasized the importance of simplifying work permit procedures and formulating agreements regarding worker mobility to facilitate the contribution of Bangladeshi workers to Montenegro’s economy.

Furthermore, emphasis was placed on exploring new opportunities for cooperation in trade, investment, and other areas by leveraging Montenegro’s potential for regional connectivity with the Baltic region and beyond.
