A peaceful, democratic and prosperous future for Bangladesh is in everyone’s interest, said Sarah Cook. She said the UK looks forward to working closely with the new government and the people of Bangladesh on issues of mutual priority.
She made the remarks at an iftar reception in Dhaka.
The British High Commissioner said that an independent and impartial media and the protection of human rights are crucial for a functioning democracy. She noted that protecting media freedom and ensuring human rights are essential foundations of any democratic system.
She also said that the UK is currently serving as the co-chair of the Global Media Freedom Coalition. At a time when the world is increasingly unstable and divided, protecting media freedom and supporting responsible journalism has become more important than ever.
Sarah Cook said the UK is working to support sustainable journalism in the public interest, to help society move forward in the right direction amid the opportunities and risks of new technologies, and to work to address the challenges faced by women journalists in particular.
She expressed hope that through cooperation with Bangladesh, it will be possible to achieve positive progress in the development of democracy, human rights and an independent media.
