KOICA Bangladesh and SUST Celebrate ‘Korean Cultural Day 2026’ in Sylhet

Desk Report:

The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Bangladesh Office and Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) jointly celebrated ‘Korean Cultural Day 2026’ in Sylhet, aiming to strengthen friendly relations between Bangladesh and South Korea and foster cultural exchange between the two nations.

The event, held on Wednesday (October 28, 2026) at the open-air stage on the university campus, saw the participation of students, faculty members, volunteers, and individuals with an interest in Korean culture.

The program featured a Taekwondo demonstration, an interactive quiz competition, and an exhibition introducing the Korean language, traditions, and culture. Additionally, participants were provided with information regarding training programs and scholarship opportunities offered by KOICA. The event was organized with the support of KOICA’s ‘World Friends Korea’ (WFK) volunteers and SUST students, while the university authorities provided the venue and administrative assistance.

In his opening remarks, Jihoon Kim, Country Director of the KOICA Bangladesh Office, highlighted the significance of cultural exchange in enhancing the relationship between Bangladesh and South Korea.

“Cultural exchange serves as a bridge of friendship between Bangladesh and Korea,” he stated. “We are grateful for the cooperation of the university and the volunteers in building this bridge.”

Professor Dr. Md. Khairul Islam, Vice-Chancellor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, commended the initiative by KOICA. He expressed the university’s gratitude to KOICA for bringing such a vibrant cultural experience to the students and expressed hope that similar initiatives would be organized at SUST in the future.

Currently, eight students are studying the Korean language at the university’s Institute of Modern Languages. In addition to the language learning program conducted with the support of volunteers from World Friends Korea, the ‘Korean Cultural Day’ provides students with an opportunity to learn about the Korean language and culture firsthand, beyond the confines of the classroom.

In his closing remarks, Kihun Seong, Deputy Country Director of the KOICA Bangladesh Office, expressed his gratitude to the university authorities, volunteers, and participants for their active cooperation.

It is worth noting that KOICA has been working closely with Bangladesh since 1993. The organization has implemented various initiatives aimed at supporting sustainable development and strengthening bilateral relations. The hosting of ‘Korean Cultural Day’ in Sylhet reflects a shared commitment to deepening mutual understanding, cultural awareness, and friendly ties between the people of Bangladesh and South Korea.
