Desk Report:
The country witnessed a historic event in the early hours of Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami paid formal tribute to the language martyrs by laying wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar for the first time.
On Saturday, at around 12:10 am, the party’s Ameer and current Opposition Leader in the National Assembly, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, along with top leaders of the 11-party alliance, laid wreaths at the main altar of the Central Shaheed Minar. After paying tribute, they stood in silence for a while and paid deep respect to the language martyrs. Later, special prayers and munajat were conducted for the forgiveness of the souls of the martyrs.
According to political analysts, the incident is significant in the political context of the country. In the past, there was no precedent for the party to pay formal tributes at the Central Shaheed Minar in this way. This is the first time that the party’s top leadership, as part of a state ritual and as the leader of the opposition alliance, laid a wreath in memory of the language martyrs.
Chief Whip of the National Assembly and NCP leader Nahid Islam, MPs Hasnat Abdullah, ATM Azharul Islam and other MPs and central leaders of the 11-party alliance were present at the time.
