As part of the ongoing political dialogue ahead of the upcoming national election scheduled for February, leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami met with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday evening at the State Guest House Jamuna.
The four-member Jamaat delegation was led by Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher. Other members included Secretary General Professor Mia Golam Porwar, Assistant Secretary General A.T.M. Masum, and party leader Rafiqul Islam Khan.
On behalf of the government, Planning Adviser Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud, Law Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul, and Industry Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan were present at the meeting.
During the discussion, the Jamaat leaders demanded that a referendum on the July Charter be held before the national election.
“Since many elements of the July Charter are closely linked to the upcoming election, a referendum should be conducted beforehand,” said Dr. Taher during the meeting. He further explained that holding both the referendum and the election on the same day could “prolong the voting process and create logistical complications.”
The Jamaat delegation expressed their full confidence in the Chief Adviser’s leadership and the neutrality of the interim government, emphasizing that ensuring a fair election requires maintaining administrative impartiality.
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus assured the Jamaat leaders that the interim government would take all necessary steps to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election. He called upon all active political parties to cooperate in making the election inclusive and celebratory.
“You can be assured of our neutrality. We have already taken several measures to guarantee a fair election, and more initiatives will soon be visible,” the Chief Adviser said.
He also informed the delegation that he would personally oversee any administrative reshuffles before the election and would coordinate closely with the Election Commission to implement required measures.
