Interim government working to ensure security of people’s lives and property – Home Affairs Advisor

Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) said that the interim government is working to ensure security of people’s lives and property. Necessary steps have been taken to ensure exemplary punishment by bringing fascism and its allies, miscreants, anarchists and terrorists under the law. Fascism has departed; but their allies are carrying out various conspiracies against the government at home and abroad. In view of this, the ‘Operation Devil Hunt’ campaign has been launched under the Ministry of Home Affairs from February 8, 2025, in coordination with the forces engaged in maintaining law and order, to bring these miscreants and their associates who are creating unrest across the country under the law.

The advisor made these remarks while addressing the chief guest at the inaugural session of a workshop on “Enforcement of Law with Emphasis on Human Rights and Environment in the Changing Situation of the Country” at the Rajarbagh Police Auditorium in the capital on Tuesday (February 11, 2025) morning.

Under the chairmanship of Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Nasimul Gani, Advisor to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Asif Nazrul and Advisor to the Ministry of Industry Adilur Rahman Khan spoke as invited guests at the workshop. Additional Secretary of the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs Khandaker Md. Mahabubur Rahman delivered the welcome speech. Among others, Special Assistant to the Principal Advisor on the Ministry of Home Affairs Md. Khoda Bakhas Chowdhury, Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam BPM and Attorney General of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh Md. Asaduzzaman were present at the event.

Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) said that the Ministry of Home Affairs is supervising the overall activities of “Operation Devil Hunt” and the overall activities of “Operation Devil Hunt” are being coordinated through the ‘Joint Operation Center’ established at the Police Headquarters under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Metropolitan Police Commissioner in the metropolitan area and the District Magistrate at the district level are coordinating the operation.

The advisor said that the government is working to bring the terrorists directly involved in the July-August killings, the special helmet force involved in the homicides, the fascists involved in criminal crimes and their accomplices, money launderers, looters, conspirators, miscreants, traitors, and the accused in ACC cases under the law. The government’s police force, Rapid Action Battalion, and members of the armed forces have arrested a significant number of these criminals through legal processes. This process is ongoing.

Legal Advisor Dr. Asif Nazrul said, “We are going through a challenging time after the fall of the dictatorial government. There is no structure of the state that they have not destroyed, including law and order, the judiciary, and the economy. If these four important institutions of the state – courts, prosecution, administration, and police – work in coordination, the people will get justice and the law and order situation will improve.” He said, “If the police and courts are functional, tyranny will decrease. People want to see the institutions of the state working effectively, and the state has a real existence.” He urged the judges not to grant bail hastily and not to deprive people eligible for bail.

Industrial Advisor Adilur Rahman said, “Hundreds of disappearances and thousands of extrajudicial killings occurred during the previous fascist government.” Along with the administration and judiciary, the state structure has been used to establish a fascist regime. He said that human rights activists, along with students, public and political activists, have made an important contribution in the July Revolution. The current interim government has started working to liberate the people and establish human rights. For this, it has started reform activities in various sectors including the police, administration and judiciary. He said that the law enforcement agencies must work keeping in mind the ‘fundamental human rights principles’ and the courts must be truly effective.

All magistrates of Dhaka and Gazipur Metropolitan Magistrates, all public prosecutors, Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police of Dhaka and Gazipur, all zonal Deputy Police Commissioners of Dhaka and Gazipur Metropolitan and officers-in-charge of all police stations participated in the workshop.
