Intensified Canal Excavation Initiative to Address Waterlogging: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman

Staff Reporter:

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that the government is intensifying the excavation of canals across the country as part of its efforts to address the growing problem of waterlogging.

He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a civic reception held at the Sylhet City Corporation premises at around 11:30 AM on Saturday (May 2, 2026).

The Prime Minister said, “One of our major challenges is the excessive extraction of groundwater. Water is being pumped from underground for agriculture and other purposes. This is gradually leading us towards a dangerous situation. If we want to address this crisis now, the first step is to excavate and restore our canals.”

He further emphasized that canal re-excavation is essential for resolving waterlogging and maintaining environmental balance, adding that the government is working on a well-planned strategy in this regard.

Referring to the development of Sylhet, the Prime Minister said that the government has long-term plans not only for Sylhet but for the entire country. As part of this, initiatives are underway to double the Sylhet–Dhaka railway line, and efforts are being made to expedite the completion of ongoing road infrastructure projects.

On the healthcare sector, he stated that reducing the number of patients depends on ensuring a healthier population. “If people remain healthy, the burden on hospitals will decrease and healthcare services will improve,” he said. In line with this goal, 130,000 health workers are being recruited who will work at the grassroots level to raise health awareness. He also mentioned the initiative to launch a 250-bed hospital in Sylhet, which will later be expanded to a 1,200-bed facility.

The event was presided over by Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury and conducted by SCC official Suchanda Ray. Speakers included Commerce Minister Khondker Abdul Muktadir, Labour and Expatriates Welfare Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister Humayun Kabir, and Whip GK Gauch.

Sylhet City Corporation Chief Executive Officer Reza Rafin Sarkar highlighted the city’s challenges and potential during the program. The event was attended by Members of Parliament from various constituencies in Sylhet, political leaders, and professionals from different sectors. The Prime Minister’s wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, was also present at the ceremony.
