India’s sudden decision to cancel transshipment facilities will not have a major impact on Bangladesh’s export sector, said Sheikh Bashiruddin, Trade Advisor to the interim government. He said that the Bangladesh government has already started working on alternative arrangements and is adopting new plans to increase export capacity to third countries.
Responding to a question from journalists at the secretariat in the capital on Thursday (April 10), he said, “We are ready to deal with this crisis. We will adopt alternative arrangements for the transshipment of 40-50 thousand metric tons of goods that used to be transshipped through three Indian ports.”
He also said, “We will try to increase the capacity so that there is no shortage in exports and communication. We will work on how inclusive and competitive trade can be made. We will overcome this impact soon.”
