Home Advisor’s instructions expanding road and increase parking space to ease traffic congestion

Home Adviser Lt. Gen. Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) on Tuesday (29 October, 2024) asked the authorities concerned to expand the road and parking place under the project titled “Preservation of history and historic building of Old Dhaka Central Jail and development of surroundings” to end the nagging traffic jam in that part of the capital. He issued the directive after visiting the Old Dhaka Central Jail to inspect the progress of the project.

“The project has to be completed with the budget allocated for the scheme. We have to come out of the practice of increasing budget of any project by showing logical and illogical reasons. Budget will not be increased (in this project),” he said.

Replying to a question on worsening traffic jam in the capital city, the home adviser said they believe in the freedom of express, adding that the jam would decrease manifolds if the demonstrations for realization of the various demands are held in the Suhrawardi Udyan instead of blocking the roads.

About the cause of traffic jam, he said the numbers of vehicles are increasing everyday but the roads are limited while the number of population in Dhaka is one the rise as people in large numbers are coming to the capital city in search of jobs.

The home adviser highly praised the role of the students in checking traffic jams in Dhaka after August 5 changeover.

“So, around 1,000 students have been deployed in Dhaka road after giving them required training on traffic management marking the traffic fortnight,” he said.

Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General Syed Md. Motaher Hossain and Project Director (PD) Lt Col SM Touhidul Islam were present, among others.
