Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh, has said that ousted dictatorial Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina must face trial for crimes against humanity.
He expressed his government’s commitment in an interview with UK-based Sky News, saying, “There will be trial, not just for her. Everyone associated with her – her family members, her associates or friends – will also be brought to justice.”
Hasina is accused of overseeing enforced disappearances while in government and the massacre of protesters in July and August last year.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted in the face of intense student and public protests, is currently in exile in India. She is accused of running secret detention camps where her political opponents were tortured and in some cases killed in the name of interrogation. All this was done in the name of the so-called “war on terror.”
The report, published on Sky News today, said that Bangladesh has issued two arrest warrants against Hasina. Professor Muhammad Yunus said that they have sent a ‘formal letter’ to India, but there has been ‘no formal response’ yet.
He stressed that Hasina must face justice whether she is physically present in Bangladesh or has fled to India.
