The government has set a target to generate 20% of the country’s total electricity demand from renewable energy sources by 2030, and 30% by 2040. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman stated that integrated initiatives—including the expansion of solar power—have been undertaken to ensure long-term security in the power and energy sector.
He made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the two-day ‘Bangladesh Solar Expo-2026,’ held on Tuesday morning (November 3) at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Center in Agargaon, Dhaka. The Prime Minister inaugurated the expo, which is themed: “Utilize Every Inch of Rooftop, Increase Income through Solar Power.”

The Prime Minister noted that the government is well aware of the hardships faced by the public regarding the country’s energy and power situation. He emphasized that the government is working simultaneously to stabilize power and energy supplies, review costs and contracts within the power sector, increase domestic gas exploration, diversify energy sources, and rapidly expand solar power. Comprehensive measures have been taken to ensure long-term security in the power and energy sector.

He further added that achieving the targets for renewable energy production requires the involvement of everyone—from public and private institutions to individual citizens across the country. In this regard, the expansion of rooftop solar power systems can play a pivotal role.
This inaugural solar expo is jointly organized by the Power Division, the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, and the Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL).
The expo showcases modern innovations in solar power and battery storage technology, investment opportunities, and various technical advancements within the renewable energy sector. Additionally, it emphasizes strengthening collaboration among public and private stakeholders to ensure energy security, promote sustainable development, and increase the adoption of solar power.
The event was presided over by the Minister of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud. Present on the stage at the time were State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit, Finance Secretary Dr. Md. Khairuzzaman Majumder, and Secretary of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Mirana Mahrukh.
