Water Resources Minister Md. Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie said that many people have lost their homes, land and savings due to the erosion of the Meghna. That is why the current government has plans to build a bank protection dam in a 62-kilometer area from Majuchodhurirhat to Kamalnagar-Ramgati.
The minister said these things while inspecting the Meghna River Bank Protection Dam Project in Asalpara village of Alexander Union in Ramgati Upazila of Lakshmipur district on Saturday (March 14, 2026).
The minister said that people in the coastal region have to fight nature to survive. Floods and inundations during the monsoon season cause extensive damage to the lives and livelihoods of the people of this region. People are suffering due to the lack of a dam from Majuchodhurir Hat to Kamalnagar-Ramgati-Bayarchar. Many are losing their land and crops and becoming destitute.
The Water Resources Minister also said that the people have got a patriotic government under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Work has started to implement the people’s important and long-standing demands. He said that the Ministry of Water Resources will pay special attention to how the work of the river bank protection dam is going on and what is the quality of the work. In addition, he called for the speedy completion of the ongoing work.
