Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the government is in a very strict and legal position to improve the law and order situation in the country and restore peace to the people. He said that the people have a full mandate on this government formed through a democratic and transparent election. Although some time is needed to restructure and restore order to various organizations from the fragile and chaotic state inherited from them, the government is moving in the right direction.
The minister said this while briefing journalists after the meeting of the ‘National Committee on Coordination, Management and Law and Order of Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Citizens’ at the conference room of the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Monday (May 4, 2026).
The high-level meeting chaired by the Home Minister was attended by Social Welfare Minister Abu Zafar Md. Zahid Hossain, Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam and other members of the committee participated.
Responding to journalists’ questions regarding the recent transfers and compulsory retirement in the police administration, the Home Minister said that this is not a political issue but a regular routine activity of the ministry. Appointments, transfers, promotions, disciplinary measures and retirement are all being completed through a legal process. He said that there is no specific time limit for these administrative tasks; it is an ongoing process.
Regarding compulsory retirement, he said that the decision has been taken after scrutiny and selection through the internal committee of the ministry and as per the rules so that no injustice occurs.
Regarding the criminals released from prison on bail after August 5, 2024, the minister said that getting bail from the court is a legal matter. However, the police are vigilant so that these identified criminals cannot create chaos in the society again. He warned that in the case of any crime, including murder, the law will take its own course and the criminals must be brought under the law.
The minister announced that a special joint operation has been launched across the country from May 1 against drugs, illegal weapons and extortion. The Narcotics Control Department, police, RAB and various intelligence agencies are working together in this operation. He said that our main goal is to catch the main masterminds of the drug trade and big syndicates involved in smuggling across the border. A zero tolerance policy has been adopted to get rid of this terrible drug situation.
The minister informed about the policy decision regarding the new uniform in view of the dissatisfaction with the existing police uniform for a long time. He said that changes are being made to the previous traditional dress pattern considering the application and overall acceptability of the police.
According to the new decision, the shirt color of the metropolitan and district police will remain as before, but the ‘khaki’ color has been confirmed for the pants. As some time is required for the production and preparation of the cloth, it will be formally implemented soon.
Regarding the management of the Rohingya camps, the minister said that a comprehensive action plan has been taken to ensure discipline for about 1.2 to 1.4 million forcibly displaced Myanmar citizens residing in Ukhia and Teknaf, prevent drug smuggling, and strengthen security measures inside and outside the camps. The meeting also had important discussions on the leadership and operational issues of the Joint Force.
Terming the recently concluded parliamentary session as one of the most successful and effective sessions in history, the Home Minister said that after 17 long years, a vibrant and diverse parliament has been established in the country. Constructive debates and a record number of laws have been enacted in a cordial atmosphere between the government and the opposition parties, which is a positive message for democracy.
Senior officials of the Home Ministry and journalists from various media outlets were present during the briefing.
