A delegation led by Dr. Tasneem Siddiqui, Founding Chairman of Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RAMRU), paid a courtesy call on Acting Speaker of the National Assembly of Bangladesh Barrister Kaiser Kamal MP.
The Acting Speaker said, “I have come to the parliament to represent the people of the country. Our responsibility towards the country and the people is immense.” He said, “A lot of research is needed to alleviate the suffering of the people of the Haor region and to overcome their livelihood crisis. And we need to put the knowledge gained from this research to good use.”
During the meeting, they discussed the formation of a parliamentary caucus to work on climate change on a global scale. They agreed to highlight the position of countries like Bangladesh in the context of climate change in the Parliamentary Forum of the COP Conference.
During this time, they exchanged views on migration and internally displaced people due to climate change. The Acting Speaker expressed the opinion that climate change and natural disasters are changing people’s lives and livelihoods and as a result, social and family bonds are gradually weakening.
It is worth noting that it is a leading research institute and think tank in Bangladesh, which works on migration, refugees and internal displacement. It was established at the University of Dhaka in 1995. Its main goal is to provide support for poverty alleviation and policy formulation through migration, and to research and support policy formulation on the rights of migrant workers, refugees, climate-induced displacement and marginalized communities.
