Dialogue and consensus are the basis for progress in democracy: Danish Ambassador

Diplomatic Desk:

A grand reception was organized in Dhaka on Friday (June 5, 2026) to mark Denmark’s National Constitution Day. The day is celebrated as a national celebration of democracy, freedom and fundamental rights in Denmark.

The event, hosted by Danish Ambassador Christian Brix Moller, was attended by around 100 guests. Danish citizens living in Bangladesh, corporate stakeholders, development partners and representatives of the Bangladesh-Denmark Alumni Network were present.

In his speech at the event, the Ambassador highlighted Denmark’s long democratic journey. He said that in Denmark, democracy is not just a system of governance, but a way of life – where decisions are made through dialogue, trust and inclusion. He noted that it took Denmark 52 years to reach a full-fledged parliamentary democracy from its first constitution and in the next 52 years, the country has evolved into its current “participatory democratic system”, which is based on pluralism and participatory principles.

The Ambassador further said that differences are normal and an acceptable reality in democracy. Compromise and consensus building, despite political differences, serve as the basis for progress.

He expressed satisfaction with the ongoing discussions on the current constitutional reform in Bangladesh and expressed hope that an inclusive process based on the July Charter would ensure participation, dialogue and consensus of all stakeholders.

The keynote address was delivered by Professor Dr. AK Enamul Haque, Director General of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS). He discussed in detail the challenges and prospects of Bangladesh towards 2035. Later, an open and lively discussion was held with the participants.
