China’s cooperation in various sectors to increase further: Local Government Minister Dr. Abdul Moin Khan

Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Dr. Abdul Moin Khan has expressed hope that China’s cooperation in various sectors including infrastructure development, port management, waste management and renewable energy in Bangladesh will increase further.

These issues were discussed during a courtesy call with Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen at the office of the Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives at the Secretariat on Thursday (August 27, 2026). State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam was present at the meeting.

The meeting discussed various issues including Dhaka’s waste management and sewage system, housing development, inclusion of Mandarin or Chinese language in Bangladesh’s education curriculum, expansion of the pipeline network necessary to make the Dasherkandi Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) fully usable, and increasing the use of renewable energy.

At the time, State Minister Mir Shahe Alam said that an investment proposal of about Tk 10,000 crore has been made to China to develop modern housing systems for the development of the capital’s Karail, Gulshan and Mohakhali slums. He also said that China has initially shown a positive attitude towards implementing this proposal in phases.

The meeting also discussed the possibility of further expanding China’s cooperation in various development sectors of Bangladesh. Emphasis was placed on strengthening mutual cooperation in important sectors such as urban management, sewage, waste management and renewable energy.

The meeting was attended by Local Government Department Secretary Md. Shahidul Hasan, Dhaka WASA Managing Director Md. Moniruzzaman and other senior officials of the ministry were present.
