The British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Ms. Sarah Cooke, paid a courtesy call on the Leader of the Opposition in the Bangladesh National Parliament, Md. Shafiqur Rahman.
The meeting, held at the office of the Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament Building on Wednesday (June 10, 2026), resulted in fruitful discussions on various issues of mutual interest between Bangladesh and the UK.
The meeting was attended by Timothy Duckett, Political Counsellor of the British High Commission, and Katie Ward, Second Secretary (Political), at the British High Commission.
During the exchange of views, the political and economic situation of Bangladesh after the elections, the upcoming national budget, the prospects for expanding bilateral trade and investment, the immigration process, and various important aspects of Bangladesh-UK relations were discussed.
During the meeting, the Leader of the Opposition praised the UK’s contribution to strengthening parliamentary democracy in Bangladesh, capacity building and training activities for parliamentarians, and the country’s development. On the other hand, the British High Commissioner praised the shadow government and shadow budget initiatives of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and emphasized the need to strengthen mutual cooperation between the two countries.
Both sides expressed hope that the existing friendly relations, trade, investment and cooperation in various fields between Bangladesh and the UK will be further expanded and accelerated in the future.
The meeting was attended by the Leader of the Opposition’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Barrister Mir Ahmed Bin Quasem Arman, MP, and Ali Ahmed Mabroor, a member of the party’s Foreign Affairs Advisory Team.
