Diplomatic Desk:

On March 31, 2026, the 55th anniversary of Bangladesh’s independence was celebrated with due dignity and deep respect at the Russian House in Dhaka, which was organized in collaboration with the Liberation War Academy Trust.

The event began with a minute’s silence in memory of the martyrs of the great Liberation War. At the same time, deep respect was paid to the Soviet Navy for its historic role in removing mines from the ports of Chittagong and Mongla, which made an important contribution to the reconstruction of Bangladesh after independence.

While speaking at the event, Alexandra A. Khlevnoy, Director of the Russian House in Dhaka, mentioned the long-standing friendly relations between Bangladesh and Russia. She highlighted the important assistance of the Soviet Union during the Liberation War and their continued contribution to the development of Bangladesh in the post-independence period. She also mentioned the various initiatives of the institution to strengthen cooperation through educational, scientific and cultural exchanges.

Dr. Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad and representatives of freedom fighters from different districts present at the event expressed deep gratitude for the support of the Soviet Union in the Liberation War and subsequent reconstruction. They reiterated the importance of this historic partnership.

20 brave freedom fighters and two eminent personalities were honored at the event. Dr. Abul Kalam Azad presented a commemorative gift to Ms. Khlevnoy in tribute to the Russian martyrs.
