High Commissioner of Malta to Bangladesh (resident in New Delhi), Mr. Reuben Gauci, paid a courtesy call on Ms. Shama Obaed Islam, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday (01 April, 2026). He congratulated the State Minister on her appointment and expressed hope that bilateral relations would be further strengthened under the new government.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the mutually beneficial partnership, exploring avenues for enhancing cooperation in trade and commerce, education, gender equality, as well as migration matters. The State Minister appreciated Malta for extending holistic visa services for Bangladeshi students and workers from Dhaka, as it saves valuable time and money.
The State Minister and the High Commissioner discussed strengthening political collaboration in both bilateral and multilateral settings. The State Minister requested Malta’s support for Bangladesh’s candidacy for the Presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for the term 2026–2027.
Both sides underscored the importance of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the EU to enhance bilateral trade. The two sides further exchanged views on regional and global issues, emphasizing the importance of peace, stability, and enhanced international cooperation.
