Bangladesh Ambassador holds bilateral meeting with Libyan Foreign Minister

Bangladesh Ambassador to Libya, Major General Abul Hasnat Muhammad Khairul Bashar, met with Libya’s Acting Foreign Minister, Mr. Taher Al-Bawr, in a bilateral meeting on Tuesday (18 March 2025). The meeting was attended by the Director General (Asia and Australia) of the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Minister (Political) of the Embassy.

At the beginning of the meeting, both sides exchanged greetings and congratulations on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Libya-Bangladesh diplomatic relations and identified this relationship as an important milestone. They expressed their commitment to further strengthen and expand the existing friendly relations between the governments and peoples of the two countries.

In the meeting, both sides agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on Foreign Office Consultations between the Foreign Ministries of the two countries. The Honorable Foreign Minister said that Libya has already given its consent to the draft memorandum proposed by the Bangladesh government. Both sides expressed their commitment to work together to finalize the memorandum quickly. It is hoped that this memorandum of understanding will play an important role in deepening economic and diplomatic relations and creating new areas of cooperation in the future.

In the meeting, the Ambassador sought the cooperation of the Libyan government in ensuring the overall welfare and security of Bangladeshi citizens working in Libya. In particular, mentioning the issue of long-term delay in salaries of Bangladeshi professionals working under the Libyan Ministry of Health, he sought the intervention of the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a speedy resolution. In response, the Honorable Foreign Minister praised the patience and dedication of the Bangladeshi professionals and assured to take necessary steps to resolve the issue quickly.

The meeting discussed the irregular migration crisis in Libya. The Ambassador reiterated the Bangladesh government’s strong stance on preventing illegal migration and pledged to work closely with the Libyan government. He sought the cooperation of the Libyan government in stopping the kidnapping, torture for ransom and arbitrary detention of Bangladeshi citizens in Libya.

At the end of the meeting, the Ambassador sought the cooperation of the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in providing exemption from various documents including fines for Khoruz Nihai, Dukhul and police reports in repatriating Bangladeshi citizens in danger and victims of human trafficking in Libya through IOM, embassies and private initiatives. The Honorable Foreign Minister assured to take necessary measures in this regard immediately.
