Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Advisor Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan said, not only state reform is essential after the July Uprising, but also our individual, political party and social reform.
He said this as the chief guest at a program organized at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium on Tuesday (February 25, 2025) to mark the National Local Government Day.
This year’s Local Government Day is being celebrated with the slogan ‘Youth’s commitment to building the country, local reform in public service’.
Advisor Asif said, ‘I see with great sadness that many political leaders are making misleading statements. The people of Bangladesh want to see positive changes in all aspects after the July Uprising. I hope you will try to give more elegant and polite statements.’
He said, ‘Ensuring service to the people is one of the main goals of the Local Government Department. At this moment, there are many challenges in giving responsibilities to people’s representatives through local government elections. I think that at least the city corporation elections should be held. This will provide some relief to the people from the daily problems they are facing.’
The advisor further said, ‘During the 16-year long fascist regime, every institution in the country has been destroyed by the clutches of corruption and fascism. Since the interim government took office, it has been fighting the long practice of corruption. At the same time, a reform commission has been formed to make the institutions effective and advance in public service.’
Mentioning that the local government department will be developed in a new way, he further said, ‘The local government department is working to implement our constitutional commitment to strengthen the local government. By implementing the proposals of the reform commission, we will be able to develop the local government in a new way. Hopefully, the people of Bangladesh will enjoy its long-term benefits.’
Regarding the current law and order situation, Asif said, ‘Currently, there is apprehension among the people of the country about the law and order situation. The law and order forces have not yet recovered from the situation in which the law and order forces were made to face the people during the July mass uprising. This is a long-term process. However, I will urge the law and order forces to play a more active role in ensuring the security of the people.’
