The Algerian Embassy in Dhaka commemorated the 63rd anniversary of Algeria’s Victory Day with a solemn and dignified ceremony held at its headquarters on Tuesday (19 March, 2025).
The event commenced with the hoisting of the national flag of Algeria, accompanied by the diffusion of the Algerian national anthem. A moment of silence was observed to honor the memory of the valiant martyrs who sacrificed their lives for Algeria’s independence. Following this, His Excellency Dr. Abdelouahab Saidani, the Ambassador of Algeria to Bangladesh, paid tribute to the fallen heroes by offering a floral wreath. The Khatib of Gulshan Jamee Masjid, Mr. Anwarul Hoque, recited the Fatiha and prayed for the martyrs, as well as for the prosperity of Algeria and Bangladesh.

During the celebration, Ambassador Dr. Abdelouahab Saidani delivered an inspiring speech, emphasizing the significance of the day. He reiterated that such commemorations serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made for independence and reinforce the unity and determination of the Algerian people. The Ambassador highlighted this year’s theme, “In the footsteps of victory, loyalty to the march of the Free”, which reflects Algeria’s unwavering commitment to sovereignty and progress.
Dr. Saidani provided historical context, recalling the events of March 19, 1962, when a ceasefire was declared following the signing of the Evian Accords on March 18, 1962. These agreements between the provisional Government of the Algerian Republic (GPRA) and the French government paved the way for Algeria’s independence. A self-determination referendum was subsequently held on July 1, 1962, leading to the formal declaration of independence on July 5, 1962, coinciding with the 132nd anniversary of French colonial rule in Algeria.
The Ambassador also shed light on Algeria’s ongoing progress as a nation with immense potential. He spoke about the country’s rapid transformation across its 58 districts, spanning over 2.4 million square kilometers. Additionally, he discussed Algeria’s open-door policy for investments, aimed at fostering a favorable business environment and contributing to economic development in Algeria and the broader Sahel region.
The event was attended by respected businessmen, dignitaries, religious scholars, local journalists, Algerian expatriates, and embassy officials.
The ceremony concluded with the screening of a 15-minute documentary in English and Arabic, depicting the journey to Algeria’s independence and the sacrifices endured. The documentary also included a statement from French President Emmanuel Macron, in which he acknowledged colonization as a “crime against humanity.”
