Acting Speaker of the National Assembly and Nepalese Ambassador agree to implement SAARC

Acting Speaker of the National Assembly of Bangladesh Barrister Kaiser Kamal MP paid a courtesy call on Nepalese Ambassador to Bangladesh Ghanshyam Bhandari at his office today, Wednesday (July 29, 2026). During this time, they expressed optimism about re-implementing SAARC.

The Acting Speaker said that there is still an opportunity to achieve the desired development of South Asian countries by expanding mutual cooperation, for which SAARC was established by the visionary of SAARC, martyr President Ziaur Rahman, by re-implementing SAARC. In this regard, he called on Nepal to come forward, and the Nepalese Ambassador agreed.

The Acting Speaker thanked the Speaker of the Nepalese Parliament, Dol Prasad Aryal, for knowing that the Bangladesh-Nepal Parliamentary Friendship Group has been formed in the Federal Parliament of Nepal. He expressed hope that the Bangladesh-Nepal Parliamentary Friendship Group will soon be formed in the Bangladesh National Parliament to create an opportunity for exchange of views on issues of mutual interest between the two countries.

The Acting Speaker said that if the parliamentary friendship group of both countries becomes effective, it will strengthen parliamentary diplomacy, develop bilateral relations, organize mutual parliamentary visits, exchange experiences on lawmaking and good governance, cooperate on issues of mutual interest in international forums, and work on the problems and prospects of both countries.

Referring to the import of electricity from Nepal to Bangladesh, he said that both countries can utilize the opportunity to further expand the scope of discussions on issues of mutual interest such as education, culture, increasing youth and people-to-people contacts, water, energy, regional connectivity, trade and climate change.

Nepalese Ambassador Ghanshyam Bhandari praised the new journey of Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and expressed his determination to work more closely with the current democratic government. Appreciating the progress made by Bangladesh in various indicators towards graduation from the Least Developed Country (LDC) list to the status of a developing country, he expressed hope that Bangladesh would be able to achieve the UN LDC graduation within the stipulated time frame.

Among others, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Nepal Embassy, ​​Pratik Karki, and Secretary of the National Parliament Secretariat, Barrister Md. Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan were present.
