Chief Advisor signs final approval of draft Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025

The Advisory Council has given in-principle and final approval to the draft Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, adding provisions to prohibit individuals or entities involved in terrorist activities and their activities.

The Advisory Council approved the draft in a meeting of the Advisory Council held at the State Guest House Jamuna on Sunday (May 11, 2025) under the chairmanship of Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus.

The summary of the meeting said that the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009, was enacted to make provisions for the prevention of certain terrorist acts and their effective punishment, including related matters.

For the purpose of the said Act, the Government may, on the basis of reasonable grounds that any person or entity is involved in terrorist activities, by notification in the Official Gazette, list such person in the Schedule or declare the entity prohibited and list it in the Schedule. However, there is no provision in the present Act regarding the prohibition of the activities of any entity. Since the said matter needs to be clarified and provisions added, it is appropriate and necessary to further amend the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009 to make it timely.

In the above context, the Anti-Terrorism Act has been amended to prohibit the activities of the entity, make necessary adaptations and include provisions prohibiting the promotion through online and social media.

The amendment may be issued in the form of an ordinance tomorrow.
