Those who do not pay taxes by using political influence will not get any more exemptions: DNCC Administrator

Influential people who do not pay taxes by using political influence, those who owe a lot, will not get any more exemptions this time. Therefore, if they do not pay their taxes voluntarily, the people of the City Corporation will go to their houses and bother them and take legal action, said DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ejaz.

He said these things while inaugurating the Municipal Tax Fair 2025 of Dhaka North City Corporation on Sunday (May 11, 2025).

At that time, he also said, the common people want to pay taxes, but people have a misconception that the tax payment process is complicated, so they do not come to pay taxes. This time we have solved this problem. The online payment process of the municipal tax of Dhaka North City Corporation has been simplified. Taxes can be paid from home.

The DNCC Administrator said, we have conducted public hearings in the DNCC areas and found that the demand of the citizens for roads, drainage and street lights is high, but the revenue collection is not in proportion. He identified three reasons for the non-collection of revenue: first, most of the newly merged 18 wards of DNCC are not included in the tax list. Commercial use is also taking place in residential areas, from where we are not getting any revenue. Many newly built shops and commercial establishments should be brought under the tax list.

He further said in this regard, those who pay taxes or those who do not pay taxes are given the civic benefits of the City Corporation, we have a manpower crisis, when we go to hire permanent manpower, revenue is spent on paying their salaries and allowances, a large part of the revenue is spent on infrastructure development. Keeping this expenditure in mind, this municipal tax fair is being organized to meet the collection target and facilitate the payment of municipal tax.

The administrator said, we have noticed that there are some places in DNCC from which if taxes were collected, our development expenditure would be more than it. For example, he mentioned the Bashundhara residential area. At this time, he said, we have discussed with Bashundhara, they have agreed to pay the tax.

He further said, we have been able to motivate the residents of 18 wards to pay taxes through public hearings. If they come and pay taxes at the fair, they will get benefits and can solve all their problems sitting at one table. They have also expressed interest.

The DNCC administrator lamented that corporate institutions do not pay taxes properly. United Hospital has about 20 to 30 crore taka in tax arrears. Similarly, Renaissance Hotel, Westin Hotel and various private universities also have such a large amount of tax arrears. It is unethical that they take the maximum from the city corporation but do not pay taxes.

He further added that among those who are on the tax list, about 25,000 people have a minimum tax arrears of one lakh taka. There are about five times more than that outside the tax list. After the fair, we will send people for assessment to bring all the citizens on the tax list. Therefore, we request the citizens to be self-motivated and get included in the tax list and pay municipal taxes. We have set a 7.5 percent rebate at the fair. To avoid any harassment, the online portal has been kept open. Just as you can get a trade license sitting at home, you can also pay holding tax sitting at home.

The administrator said that paying taxes is the duty of citizens to the country. So everyone should pay taxes. Those who owe a lot will be given a croak notice very soon.

He said, if we want to change Dhaka, then the City Corporation will have to be strong. If we want to develop infrastructure, just as the City Corporation is by your side 24 hours a day, you will also have to be with us by paying taxes.

Among others, DNCC Chief Executive Officer Abu Sayeed Md. Kamruzzaman, Chief Engineer Brig. Gen. Md. Moin Uddin, Chief Revenue Officer Mohammad Abdullah and DNCC officials were present at the time.
