Diplomatic Desk:
Bangladesh and the UK have agreed on a new cooperation framework to combat organized migration crime, prevent fraudulent migration activities, and protect citizens from exploitation by criminal networks. This initiative will further strengthen collaboration between the two nations regarding information exchange, crime detection, and the conduct of joint operations.
The primary objective of this framework, adopted by the governments of Bangladesh and the UK, is to tackle organized crime linked to irregular migration and to promote safe and legal migration pathways. The two countries will work more closely, particularly to prevent visa and travel document fraud, fraudulent migration schemes, and other crimes associated with irregular migration.
Under this new initiative, cooperation between the relevant authorities of both countries will expand to identify the activities of criminal networks, disrupt their operations, and combat related crimes. Additionally, mechanisms will be established for discussions on crimes of mutual interest, regular meetings, and progress reviews.
This cooperation framework reflects the long-standing friendly relations and close people-to-people ties between Bangladesh and the UK. It places particular emphasis on enhancing the protection of Bangladeshi citizens who are at risk of falling victim to fraudulent migration schemes.
Sarah Cooke, the British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, stated that the partnership between Bangladesh and the UK is built on mutual respect and close ties between their peoples. She noted that this agreement reflects the shared commitment of both nations to take action against organized criminal groups that exploit citizens by using migration as a tool for financial gain.
She further added that through close cooperation, Bangladesh and the UK would intensify efforts to combat organized migration crime, support legal migration, and protect individuals and families from fraud, exploitation, and human trafficking. According to stakeholders, such cooperation can play a vital role in tackling crimes—such as defrauding aspiring migrants, using forged documents, and exposing people to danger along unsafe migration routes. At the same time, it can help raise awareness about legal migration opportunities and facilitate effective action against criminal networks at the international level.
It is expected that the effective implementation of this new cooperation framework will further strengthen bilateral ties between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom in areas such as migration management, crime prevention, and the protection of citizens.
