Visa interested in investing and expanding technology in Bangladesh

The company wants to help digital financial services, AI and freelancers bring foreign income to the country

In addition to investing and expanding business in Bangladesh, global financial technology company Visa has expressed its interest in working in the digital financial services, technology and innovation sectors. At the same time, the company has been urged to establish a technology development center or global service center in Bangladesh.

Stephen Karpin, President of Visa’s Asia-Pacific region, expressed these interests during a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The meeting was held at the Cabinet Division of the Bangladesh Secretariat on Tuesday (August 11, 2026).

During the meeting, Stephen Karpin said that there is a huge potential to work in the field of digital financial services, technology and innovation in Bangladesh. He also said that Visa is interested in investing and expanding business in Bangladesh.

He said that Visa wants to work through investment and technical cooperation to encourage card use by bank account holders in the country who are currently not covered by the card use and to increase the scope of digital transactions.

Stephen Karpin said that Visa is also interested in working on making the banking and digital payment system in Bangladesh safer, easier and faster by using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

The meeting also discussed the possibility of expanding the scope of Visa card use in various government and public service systems including metrorail, toll plazas and expressways to make daily transactions easier for the common man.

Visa also expressed its interest in contributing to the development of Bangladesh’s digital economy and creative economy. In addition, the meeting also discussed the process of developing an effective digital payment system to bring foreign income to the country safely and easily for the country’s freelancers.

The company’s representative was invited to establish a Visa technology development center or global service center in Bangladesh to create employment.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman welcomed the private sector’s partnership in expanding digital financial services and technology in Bangladesh. He emphasized the importance of international organizations like Visa in enhancing Bangladesh’s digital economy, investment and technological capacity.

Advisor to the Prime Minister on Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and Science and Technology Rehan Asif Asad, Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Ashiq Chowdhury, Governor of Bangladesh Bank Md. Mostaqur Rahman and senior officials of Visa were present during the meeting.
