Desk Report:

He gave this instruction while presiding over a meeting organized at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday (August 6, 2026) on the use of Binna grass to protect rivers and canals.

At the meeting, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Pro-Vice Chancellor (Pro-VC) and teacher of the Department of Civil Engineering Dr. Muhammad Shariful Islam gave a detailed presentation on the use of Binna grass as an environmentally friendly and sustainable solution instead of conventional concrete blocks and geo blocks along roads and railway lines in char and haor areas and in place of erosion control of rivers and canals, preservation of coastal embankments, roads in char and haor areas.

The presentation stated that Binna grass has strong roots that can hold the soil firmly, so it can play an effective role in preventing erosion of rivers and canals. Positive results have been obtained by experimentally using this grass in some parts of the country. In light of that experience, the meeting also discussed the use of Binna grass in a larger scale project form.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman praised such innovative and eco-friendly initiatives for environmental conservation, sustainable development and protection of natural resources. He directed the concerned ministries and agencies to consider the matter seriously and take necessary steps.
