Prime Minister Tarique Rahman urges US to invest in agriculture, warehousing and IT sectors

Desk Report:

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has urged the US to invest in Bangladesh’s agriculture sectors including warehousing, soybean, cotton, wheat and information technology (IT) sector. He said that through investment in these sectors, it will be possible to build a strong and competitive supply chain in the country.

On Saturday (August 1, 2026) at 9:30 am, US Special Presidential Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon. The meeting, held in a warm and cordial atmosphere, discussed various important issues including Bangladesh-US bilateral relations, investment, Rohingya crisis and trade.

In the meeting, Sergio Gor said that the US government has strong confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. He also mentioned that stability has returned to Bangladesh under his leadership. As a reflection of this trust, the US has positively revised the existing Travel Advisory on Bangladesh, he said. As a result, he also commented that this will send a positive message to US investors to invest in Bangladesh.

The meeting also discussed the Rohingya crisis in detail. Highlighting the experience of visiting the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar, the US Special Envoy highly praised the government and people of Bangladesh. He said that Bangladesh has set a unique example in sheltering a large number of Rohingyas and continuing humanitarian assistance to them.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said that more than half of the international assistance for the Rohingya comes from the United States. For this, he expressed his sincere gratitude to the US government and people. In response, Sergio Gore emphasized the importance of a sustainable and political solution to the Rohingya crisis.

The meeting also agreed to work together to re-launch testing activities in Bangladesh in cooperation with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The Prime Minister called on the US to invest in Bangladesh’s warehousing infrastructure, supply chain of soybeans, cotton, wheat and other agricultural products. He said that investments in these sectors will make the country’s supply chain stronger and more competitive.

He also highlighted the huge potential of Bangladesh in the IT sector and called for US investment. In this context, Sergio Gor said that Bangladesh has considerable potential in the IT sector and the country can be a partner in the PAX Silica initiative in the future.

The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman, Prime Minister’s Advisor on Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam, Prime Minister’s Advisors Rehan Asif Asad and Mahdi Amin, Bangladesh Ambassador to the United States Tarek Md. Ariful Islam, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen and senior officials of both countries.
