Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that after the ready-made garment industry, the semiconductor industry can be Bangladesh’s new economic potential sector. To develop this sector as the country’s next economic driving force, the government has already started creating a business-friendly environment and implementing necessary plans.
He said these things while speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the ‘National Semiconductor Symposium and BEAR Summit 2026’ organized at the Novotheater in the capital on Saturday (July 25, 2026) morning.
The Prime Minister said, “The government has taken all-out initiatives to make this next major driving force with the potential for economic prosperity a reality. Our goal is to make Bangladesh a technology-dependent, self-reliant and prosperous state.”
He referred to the conference as not just an event, but rather a gathering of one of the craftsmen in building the technology-dependent Bangladesh of the future. The Prime Minister said that Bangladeshis working abroad in different countries of the world are leaving their mark of talent and expertise. Many of them have participated in this important summit on their own initiative, which will open new possibilities for the development of the country’s technology sector.
Highlighting the importance of semiconductors in the context of the fourth and fifth industrial revolutions, the Prime Minister said that semiconductors or chips are essential in all fields, from artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, data centers, renewable energy, medical technology, smartphones to space satellites.
She also said, “By 2026, the size of the global semiconductor market will reach about 1 trillion US dollars. This huge market has immense potential for Bangladesh. I believe that it will be possible to achieve the target of export earnings from this sector by 2030.”
The BEAR Innovation Expo 2026, held as part of the summit, showcased semiconductors, artificial intelligence, robotics, healthcare technology, intelligent systems and other deep-tech innovations across 35 stalls led by students and startup entrepreneurs. The Prime Minister toured the exhibition, inquired about various innovations and encouraged young innovators.
Reiterating the government’s goal to establish Bangladesh as a major hub for global semiconductor and deep-tech innovation, the Prime Minister emphasized domestic and foreign investment, research and development of skilled human resources in technology-based industries.
