President Md. Sahabuddin has resigned due to health reasons. After accepting his resignation letter in accordance with the provisions of the constitution, Speaker of the National Assembly Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Bir Bikram) has taken charge of the acting President.
The Speaker gave this information at a press conference held at the oath-taking room of the National Assembly Secretariat on Friday (July 24, 2026) afternoon.
The Speaker said that in accordance with Article 50 (3) of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, President Md. Sahabuddin submitted his signed resignation letter to the Speaker at 5:01 PM on Friday. After accepting the resignation letter, he assumed the duties of the President in accordance with Article 54 of the Constitution. At the same time, the resignation letter has been ordered to be preserved in the records of the National Assembly Secretariat and necessary administrative actions have been taken.
He also said that the President mentioned in his resignation letter that he has been suffering from serious illness for a long time. He is suffering from heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney complications. In addition, he underwent bypass surgery on his heart and was recently diagnosed with autonomic neuropathy in a health check-up. Due to this disease, he sometimes becomes unconscious.
According to the Speaker, due to these physical complications and mental inability to perform his duties, it is not possible for the President to properly perform his constitutional duties. Considering the need for long-term treatment, he has decided to resign from the post of President.
According to the provisions of the constitution, Speaker of the National Assembly Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Bir Bikram) will serve as the acting President until a new President is elected and assumes office.
