Dr. Abdullah Al Mamun, a distinguished professor of the Department of Japanese Studies at Dhaka University (DU) and an internationally renowned educationist and researcher, has been appointed as a full-time member of the University Grants Commission (UGC). He was appointed to this important position in a notification issued by the Secondary and Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education on Saturday (May 23) afternoon.
The notification stated that he has been appointed as a full-time member of the UGC for the next four years as per the University Grants Commission Act, 1973. The appointment will be effective from the date of joining and after the government’s decision was announced, he has already submitted his formal joining letter to the chairman of the commission.
Dr. Abdullah Al Mamun has a long and rich career in teaching and research at home and abroad. He received his PhD degree on International Economic Development from the Department of Economics, Finance and Accounting at the University of Huddersfield, UK, in 2020. Earlier, he received a Postgraduate Certificate in Research Methods from the same university and a ‘Certificate in Law’ degree from the University of Northumbria, UK. He also holds an MBA degree in Marketing.
Dr. Mamun has also made Bangladesh’s name shine in education and research at the international level. He received the highly prestigious ‘Fulbright Research Professorship’ at the famous Adelphi University in the United States in 2024. He also served as a ‘Japan Foundation Fellow’ at the International University of Japan in 2023.
During his long teaching career, he has taught and given special lectures at many renowned universities around the world, including the University of Derby and Leeds Trinity University in the United Kingdom, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies and University of Kobe in Japan, Jawaharlal Nehru University in India, and Universitas Indonesia in Indonesia.
Apart from teaching, he has worked as a consultant at the policy-making level with the Economic Relations Division (ERD), Cabinet Division, National Academy of Planning and Development (NAPD), Ministry of Commerce and international organizations like BRAC, ASHA, USAID, UNDP, JETRO, Japan Foundation and Japan-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industries (JBCCI).
Dr. Abdullah Al Mamun’s contribution to research and publication is outstanding. He has published more than 50 books, book chapters and research articles in various internationally recognized journals. His works have been published by leading international publishing houses like Springer, Routledge, Palgrave Macmillan and Emerald.
The concerned parties have expressed their hope that the appointment of this distinguished academician will further boost the higher education and research activities of the UGC.
